Profile:

Genevieve Dion is an Award-winning artist whose creations have history and presence.  Each garment or accessory is constructed using the shibori technique, an Ancient Japanese craft involving folding, wrapping, clamping or stitching fabric, then adding or removing color to create swirling, sweeping and geometric patterns. Working primarily in velvet and silk, for their texture, iridescence and rich color potential, Dion's luxurious laborious designs are works of wearable art.

The Quebec native originally studied shoe design with Gaza Bowen, but she gradually segued into fashion. Her fascination with fabric led her to a shibori class in San Francisco with Yoshiko Wada, an artist and scholar, who champions the Japanese technique. With her first textile, she won first prize in the US and represented that country in the 1991 International Textile Design contest in Tokyo.

Dion's work has quite a following among celebrities, including Tina Turner and Elvis Costello. Her evening bags and interior collections have been sold at Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and her scarves and interior designs have also been sold at Holt Renfrew, Maxfield, as well as Barneys, Felissimo and Julie:Artisans Gallery in New York.

In 2000, Dion was awarded the Ornament Magazine Prize for Fiber Wearable, and in 2003 her work was recognized for its unique qualities and became part of the permanent collection at The Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
